To renovate a bathroom on a budget, keep the layout, keep anything that still works, and change the parts you see and use every day. What's The Damage (Gold Coast page) puts a basic renovation with budget fittings at $9,800 to $19,600 in 2026, and its national guide puts a cosmetic refresh at $5,000 to $12,000.
Below is what a budget bathroom costs, what to keep, what to change first, whether $10,000 is enough, what you can do yourself in Queensland, and what blows the budget. These are market prices from cost guides, checked on 26 October 2026. They are not a quote from us.
How much does a budget bathroom renovation cost?
A basic bathroom renovation with budget fittings costs about $9,800 to $19,600 on What's The Damage's Gold Coast page, typically $14,700. Its national guide puts the same tier at $10,000 to $20,000. All figures include GST.
| Type of job (What's The Damage, October 2026) | Low | Typical | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cosmetic refresh, waterproofing kept (national guide) | $5,000 | - | $12,000 |
| Basic renovation, budget fittings (Gold Coast page) | $9,800 | $14,700 | $19,600 |
| Small ensuite, 3-5 m2, same layout (Gold Coast page) | $14,700 | $20,600 | $29,400 |
| Mid-range renovation (Gold Coast page) | $19,600 | $26,450 | $34,300 |
The big gap between the first two rows is the waterproofing. A cosmetic refresh leaves the membrane and pipes alone and swaps the vanity, fixtures, accessories and paint. What's The Damage says it takes 3 to 5 days, against 3 to 6 weeks for a full renovation. Its Gold Coast page says the basic tier includes a full strip-out and fresh waterproofing.
A smaller room does not save as much as you would think. What's The Damage says the fixed costs, like waterproofing, plumbing and demolition, barely change with size, so a small ensuite is not much cheaper than a standard bathroom. For full renovation prices, see our bathroom renovation cost guide.
What should I keep to save money?
Keep the layout first. Leave the toilet, shower and basin where they are. On What's The Damage's Gold Coast page, the plumbing rough-in alone costs $1,950 to $4,900, and moving a toilet or shower waste through a concrete slab adds to it.
Then look at what still works:
- The waterproofing. A refresh only makes sense if the membrane under the tiles is sound. What's The Damage says the membrane in a bathroom built before 2005 has likely broken down, so a full renovation is the safer choice there.
- The tiles, if they are firmly stuck and flat. Taking old tiles off costs $20 to $54 a square metre on What's The Damage's Gold Coast tiling page. Our guide on whether you can tile over existing tiles covers when that works, and why a shower is different.
- The bath. A new freestanding bath costs $1,475 to $4,900 installed on the Gold Coast page. If yours is sound, keep it.
Do not keep a room that leaks. The Gold Coast page says a leaking membrane is removed entirely, not patched. New tiles or a new vanity on top of a failed membrane only hide the problem for a while.
What should I change first?
Change the fittings you use every day: the vanity, the toilet and the shower screen. If the tiles and membrane stay, What's The Damage says a refresh can be priced from these lines alone.
| Item (What's The Damage, Gold Coast page, October 2026) | Low | Typical | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanity, supplied and installed | $490 | $1,475 | $3,425 |
| Toilet, supplied and installed | $390 | $685 | $1,175 |
| Frameless shower screen, installed | $785 | $1,475 | $2,450 |
| Heated towel rail, installed | $345 | $635 | $1,175 |
At the typical prices, a new vanity, toilet and screen come to $3,635. What's The Damage notes that a figure like this leaves out tapware, painting and any repair found behind the old vanity, so ask for those as extra lines.
Two smaller changes are worth it on the coast. The Gold Coast page says the exhaust fan should vent outside, not into the roof, because with warm summer nights a bathroom rarely dries out on its own. It also suggests mould-resistant grout and silicone. If you live close to the beach, ask for marine-grade tapware, since standard chrome can pit in salt air.
Can I renovate a bathroom for under $10,000?
Yes, if it is a refresh and not a full rebuild. A cosmetic refresh costs $5,000 to $12,000 in What's The Damage's national guide. A full renovation with budget fittings starts at $9,800 on its Gold Coast page, so a full rebuild for under $10,000 sits at the very bottom of the range.
Add up the parts and you can see why. These are the main lines in a full strip-out and rebuild.
| Part (What's The Damage, Gold Coast page, October 2026) | Low | Typical |
|---|---|---|
| Demolition and disposal | $980 | $1,775 |
| Plumbing rough-in | $1,950 | $2,950 |
| Waterproofing | $685 | $1,375 |
| Tiling, supply and lay (floor and walls) | $2,750 | $4,900 |
| Vanity | $490 | $1,475 |
| Frameless shower screen | $785 | $1,475 |
| Toilet | $390 | $685 |
| Total (our sum of the lines above) | $8,030 | $14,635 |
Even with every line at its lowest, those seven parts come to about $8,030. That total is our own sum of What's The Damage's figures, not a number it gives. That is before electrical work, tapware, painting and money set aside for surprises. So in practice, under $10,000 means keeping the membrane and tiles and changing the fittings. A full rebuild at that price needs every single line to come in cheap.
What bathroom work can I do myself in Queensland?
You can do some building work on your own home, but not the plumbing or the electrical. The QBCC says an owner working on their own property does not need a licence when the work is valued at no more than $11,000.
- Plumbing and drainage need a QBCC licence at any value. Leave the toilet, basin, shower and taps to a licensed plumber.
- Electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician. Queensland's Electrical Safety Office says DIY electrical work is illegal, with penalties of up to $40,000 for individuals. That includes jobs as small as replacing a light switch, and anything hard-wired, like a hard-wired heated towel rail, must be connected by an electrician.
- Waterproofing has its own QBCC licence class. If you pay someone for building work worth more than $3,300, they must hold a QBCC licence of the right class.
Good DIY jobs are the ones with no pipes or wires, like painting or hanging a new mirror. One check first. Queensland's asbestos website says a house built before 1990 has a good chance of containing asbestos, including wall sheeting in bathrooms, and to get the facts before a job as small as putting up a towel rail. Our bathroom renovation checklist covers asbestos and the other checks to do before work starts.
What blows out a bathroom budget?
Mostly what turns up once the old tiles come off, and changes made after work starts. What's The Damage says to keep 10% to 15% aside for problems like rotten framing, asbestos and failed waterproofing.
- Moving things. Every fixture that moves needs new pipe runs, and on a concrete slab that means cutting the floor.
- Late changes. Pick your fixtures and tiles before work starts. What's The Damage says changing them mid-project is expensive.
- Thin package allowances. A package price can hide a thin tile allowance or an entry-level vanity. Get the tile, vanity and tapware allowances in writing.
- Unit rules. Body corporate by-laws can limit trade hours, noise and lift use. The Gold Coast page says lift bookings and water shut-down windows can add 1 to 2 weeks before a tradie can start.
When you compare quotes, ask for the strip-out, membrane, plumbing rough-in, tiles and fittings as separate lines, with the membrane product and its warranty named in writing. Then you can check each line against the tables above. What's The Damage also says jobs over $3,300 carry the compulsory home warranty premium, so if one quote leaves it out, add it back before you compare.
What deposit can a contractor ask for in Queensland?
It depends on the value of the job. The QBCC sets these limits:
- $3,300 or less: up to 20%
- $3,301 to $19,999: up to 10%
- more than $20,000: up to 5%
So a basic Gold Coast bathroom at the typical $14,700 falls in the 10% band, and a mid-range one at $26,450 falls in the 5% band. Progress payments have a limit too. A contractor cannot claim more than 50% of the price, deposit included, until at least half the work on site is done.
The QBCC warns that if you pay more than the legal deposit, you cannot get the extra back through the home warranty scheme. Read its deposit and progress payment rules before you pay anything.
