Timber stairs with a stainless wire balustrade by the water

Stairs built to last

Field Carpentry builds and repairs timber stairs across the Gold Coast: new staircases inside the house, outdoor steps off a deck or verandah, landings, handrails and balustrades. Brett Field has more than 25 years on the tools and holds QBCC licence 15316127.

Outdoor stairs on the coast take sun, rain and salt air every day. Brett also fixes loose or squeaky treads and rebuilds tired outdoor stairs, so you are not always up for a whole new set.

How much do timber stairs cost on the Gold Coast?

A new timber staircase inside a house usually costs $3,000 to $12,000, according to What's The Damage. The shape makes the biggest difference.

StaircaseTypical cost
Any shape (national, Oct 2026)$3,000 to $12,000
Straight$900 to $3,600
L-shaped$2,500 to $5,000
U-shaped$3,000 to $5,300
Spiral$3,300 to $5,000
Floating$4,300 to $7,500

What's The Damage (October 2026) and Oneflare (2021), checked on 4 October 2026. A guide, not a quote. Brett's quote is the real number.

Timber choice, the balustrade and the number of steps move the price too. Our timber stairs cost guide breaks it down.

What does it cost to repair or replace stairs?

Small stair repairs on the Gold Coast cost $295 to $1,175, with $590 typical, according to What's The Damage. That covers jobs like a squeaky or loose tread, or one tread or baluster replaced.

JobTypical cost
Minor stair repair$295 to $1,175
Deck steps, per step$175 to $390
Full flight of deck stairs, installed$980 to $4,400

What's The Damage Gold Coast prices (October 2026), checked on 4 October 2026.

The Queensland Government says to check a deck at least once a year for decaying timber and rusted or failed fixings. Check the stairs at the same time: outdoor stairs take the most weather.

What does a stair balustrade or handrail cost?

A balustrade on the Gold Coast costs $145 to $440 per metre, with $275 typical, according to What's The Damage. The type matters most.

BalustradeTypical cost per metre
Timber slats$145 to $180
Stainless wire$200 to $300
Frameless glassOften over $440

What's The Damage (October 2026), checked on 4 October 2026.

On a stair, the balustrade must be at least 865 mm above the front edge of the treads. Our guide to balustrade height in Queensland covers the height, gap and wire rules.

What step sizes does the building code allow?

Under the National Construction Code 2022, Part 11.2, which Queensland uses, a house stair must meet these sizes.

RuleLimit
Riser (height of each step)115 mm to 190 mm
Going (depth of each tread)240 mm to 355 mm
Two risers plus one going550 mm to 700 mm
Risers in one flight2 to 18
Landing lengthAt least 750 mm

Treads also need a slip-resistant surface, and a higher rating where they get wet. That matters on outdoor stairs near a pool. For outdoor stairs, the timber matters as much as the sizes: our decking timber guide covers how each one handles Gold Coast sun and salt air.

Do new stairs need approval or a QBCC licence?

Stair work over $3,300, counting labour and materials, must be done by a QBCC licensed contractor. Field Carpentry holds QBCC licence 15316127.

Outdoor stairs are often part of a deck job, and many decks need building approval. Our guide to council approval on the Gold Coast explains when. Building a new deck as well? Brett does the deck and the stairs together.

Brett from Field Carpentry completed a renovation for us at our home in Ashmore on the Gold Coast. The project included two bathrooms, some large doors and windows, some brick work repairs, flooring modifications and some other bits. He was fantastic to work with and the quality of work was top notch. He was always very polite and considerate of us while living in the house through the Renos, always working with us to schedule things when it would suit our family movements. Brett is a very good communicator and a great builder. We will definitely use Field Carpentry again and would recommend them to other Gold Coasters.

Brett did a bang-up job repairing and restoring our wooden deck including building a set of fully-enclosed 2 metre wide steps from scratch. He listened to what we wanted to achieve and gave us a range of options to suit different budgets. A pleasure to deal with from go to whoa, we can't fault his work ethic, craftsmanship, communication or punctuality. Would we use him again? We're already writing our "2024 List for Brett"

Brett has done several renovation jobs for us over the last 15 years - timber and stainless steel back deck and railings, timber stairwell railings, refit and installation of cupboard units in laundry and bedrooms, and timber self-close fence side gate. A skilful tradie whose work I highly recommend - quality work, great follow-through, and just a great guy to have come into our home to do the necessary work.
