A new timber staircase inside a house usually costs $3,000 to $12,000, according to What's The Damage's October 2026 prices. Outdoor deck steps cost far less: about $175 to $390 per step on the Gold Coast.

Below are the published prices by stair type, what a balustrade adds, the step sizes the building code allows, and what it costs to fix old stairs. These are market prices from cost guides, checked on 4 October 2026. They are not a quote from us.

How much does a timber staircase cost?

Published prices for a full timber staircase run from about $900 to $12,000. The shape makes the biggest difference.

L-shaped$2,500-$5,000Oneflare (2021)
U-shaped$3,000-$5,300Oneflare (2021)
Spiral$3,300-$5,000Oneflare (2021)
Floating$4,300-$7,500Oneflare (2021)

Oneflare's figures were published in 2021, so they are older than the What's The Damage range. Oneflare puts the average timber staircase at about $4,200. We could not find a stair price survey for the Gold Coast or Queensland.

How much do outdoor deck stairs cost on the Gold Coast?

What's The Damage puts Gold Coast deck steps at $175 to $390 each, with $295 typical (updated October 2026). So a set of 6 steps would come to about $1,050 to $2,340 before any balustrade. That total is our sum from their rate. Its Gold Coast decking page also prices a full flight of deck stairs, installed, at $980 to $4,400, with $1,950 typical.

The height of the deck sets how many steps you need. Each step can rise no more than 190 mm under the building code, so a deck 1 metre off the ground needs at least 6 risers (again, our sum).

What does a stair balustrade or handrail add?

A balustrade is usually priced per metre, and the type matters more than anything else.

ItemTypical costSource
Balustrade, any type (Gold Coast)$145-$440 per metre, typically $275What's The Damage (October 2026)
Timber slat balustradeAbout $145-$180 per metreWhat's The Damage (October 2026)
Stainless wire balustradeRoughly $200-$300 per metreWhat's The Damage (October 2026)
Frameless glass balustradeOften above $440 per metreWhat's The Damage (October 2026)
Handrails and balustrades, national average$287 per metreServiceSeeking (August 2026)

On a stair, the balustrade must be at least 865 mm above the front edge of the treads. Our guide to balustrade height in Queensland covers the height, gap and wire rules in full.

What do carpenters charge per hour on the Gold Coast?

About $54 to $125 an hour on the Gold Coast, according to What's The Damage. ServiceSeeking's 2026 national average is $85.42 an hour, or $617.37 a day.

ServiceSeeking notes that most carpenters still charge by the hour, but "fixed quotes are common for clearly defined projects". A new staircase is usually one of those, so ask for a fixed price.

What makes a staircase cost more?

The main things that push the price up, from the cost guides above:

  • Shape. In Oneflare's figures, L-shaped, U-shaped, spiral and floating stairs all start well above a straight flight.
  • Timber. Oneflare says timber staircase costs "are dictated by the type of wood". Pine is the cheapest, and natives like Tasmanian oak, jarrah and ironbark cost more.
  • Balustrade. Frameless glass often costs two to three times as much per metre as timber slats (our sum from the table above).
  • Length. More steps means more treads, more stringer and more balustrade.

What step sizes does the building code allow?

Under the National Construction Code 2022, Part 11.2, which still applies in Queensland, a house stair must meet these sizes.

RuleLimit
Riser (height of each step)115 mm to 190 mm
Going (depth of each tread)240 mm to 355 mm
Two risers plus one going550 mm to 700 mm
Risers in one flight2 to 18
Difference between steps next to each otherNo more than 5 mm
Difference between the biggest and smallest step in a flightNo more than 10 mm
Gaps in open risersMust not let a 125 mm sphere through
Landing lengthAt least 750 mm

Treads also need a slip-resistant surface: P3 or R10 for a dry area and P4 or R11 for a wet one. That matters on outdoor stairs that get rain or pool water. A spiral stair has its own set of sizes in the same table.

How much does it cost to fix old stairs?

Minor stair repairs on the Gold Coast, such as a squeaky or loose tread, or one tread or baluster replaced, cost $295 to $1,175, with $590 typical, according to What's The Damage.

Outdoor stairs take the most weather, so check them when you check your deck. The Queensland Government says to inspect your deck at least once a year and to look for decaying timber and rusted or failed fixings. We build new timber stairs, stair railings and landings, inside and out, and rebuild tired outdoor stairs. See our carpentry work on the Gold Coast.

Do new stairs need approval or a QBCC licence?

Stair work over $3,300, counting labour and materials, must be done by a QBCC licensed contractor.

Neither the City of Gold Coast nor the Queensland Government lists stairs on their own. The Queensland Government's general rule is that a building approval is needed "before construction can start on most types of domestic building work". Outdoor stairs are often part of a deck job, and our guide to council approval on the Gold Coast explains when a deck needs one. This is a summary, not legal advice, so ask a building certifier about your job.

Where do these prices come from?

Checked on 4 October 2026: What's The Damage (national carpenter costs, Gold Coast carpenter costs, Gold Coast decking costs, and Gold Coast deck steps and balustrade costs, all October 2026), Oneflare (staircase costs, 2021), ServiceSeeking (handrail and balustrade prices, August 2026; carpenter prices, February 2026). Rules from the Australian Building Codes Board (NCC 2022), the QBCC, Business Queensland and the Queensland Government. The 6-step total and riser count are our sums. We will check the prices again every three months.
