Most carpenters in South East Queensland charge about $55 to $130 an hour. What's The Damage's Gold Coast page puts the range at $54 to $125, with $83 typical (October 2026).

Below are hourly and day rates from the main cost guides, call-out fees, what common small jobs cost in total, and the Queensland rules for hiring a carpenter. This post is for homeowners hiring one. If you are a carpenter checking wages, employee pay is a different question. These are market prices from cost guides, checked on 5 October 2026. They are not a quote from us.

How much does a carpenter charge per hour in 2026?

Published rates run from about $35 to $155 an hour, but the typical rate in most guides is close to $85. Here is what each guide says.

SourceHourly rate
What's The Damage, Gold Coast page (October 2026)$54-$125, typically $83
What's The Damage, Brisbane page (October 2026)$55-$130, typically $85
hipages (August 2026)$40-$120
ServiceSeeking, national (February 2026)Average $85.42, from $35
The Quote Yard (March 2026)$85-$155 in cities, $75-$135 in regional areas
Airtasker (June 2024)$45-$80

The Quote Yard's range is the highest, and Airtasker's is the lowest and the oldest. We could not find a cost guide with a single figure for all of Queensland, so the Gold Coast and Brisbane pages are the closest. Ask whether a quoted rate includes GST.

What is a carpenter's day rate?

A full day of carpentry costs about $390 to $880 on What's The Damage's Gold Coast page, with $610 typical. Its Brisbane page says $400 to $900, with $620 typical.

ServiceSeeking's 2026 national average is $617.37 a day, and its lowest day rate is $300. It works out the average day as about $77.17 an hour over 8 hours. That is a little cheaper than paying the typical hourly rate for the same 8 hours.

ServiceSeeking says a day rate is used for jobs "expected to run for a full day or more". About 20% of the carpentry quotes it looked at were charged per day.

Do carpenters charge a call-out fee?

Some do, mostly on small jobs. The Quote Yard puts a carpenter's call-out or minimum charge at $70 to $120 (March 2026). What's The Damage's Gold Coast handyman page lists a call-out or minimum charge of $78 to $145, with $120 typical, for handyman work.

With a minimum charge, a 20-minute fix costs the same as a longer job up to that minimum. So if you have a few small jobs, put them on one list and get them done in one visit.

Quotes are a different matter. Yellow Pages says free, no-obligation quoting is "the standard" for carpentry (2015). Urgent work is where prices climb. Airtasker's example is a $300 door repair that a carpenter "might double" if you need it done the same day.

Should I pay by the hour or get a fixed price?

Pay by the hour for small or unclear jobs, and ask for a fixed price when the job is clear. That is roughly how the trade already works.

  • ServiceSeeking found 62% of carpentry quotes were charged per hour and 20% per day. It says fixed quotes are offered when the scope is clearly defined.
  • What's The Damage says simple repairs and installs are usually billed hourly, while decks, pergolas and custom cabinetry are usually fixed-price.
  • hipages says a carpenter may give a fixed price for a deck or pergola after looking at the size of the job.
  • Airtasker says a small job is often quoted as one price to get it finished.

An hourly rate on its own does not tell you the cost. Ask how many hours they expect, whether materials are extra, and whether travel or rubbish removal is charged on top. A fixed price puts the risk of a slow job on the carpenter, not on you.

What do common carpentry jobs cost in total?

For small jobs, the total matters more than the hourly rate. These are What's The Damage's Gold Coast prices for common jobs, updated October 2026.

JobLowTypicalHigh
Door repair or rehang$98$175$295
Door installation$245$390$635
Timber window repair$145$275$490
Timber shelving installed$195$390$685
Staircase repairs$295$590$1,175
Skirting boards (per metre)$20$34$54
Architraves (per metre)$10$18$44
Built-in wardrobe$1,175$2,450$4,900

hipages gives similar wardrobe figures: about $1,000 for budget materials, $2,500 for mid-range and $5,000 for a luxury fit-out. Airtasker lists smaller tasks too, such as wood repair at $60 to $170 and custom shelving at $100 to $325 (June 2024).

For more on bigger jobs, see our guides to door installation cost and timber stairs cost on the Gold Coast.

Why do carpenter rates vary so much?

The type of work is the biggest reason. hipages says simple jobs like fitting skirting boards sit near $40 an hour. Custom work and kitchens are $80 or more. Built-in wardrobes and complex cabinetry are closer to $120.

ServiceSeeking lists five things that move the price:

  • the type of project
  • the materials you choose
  • the size of the job
  • access and site conditions
  • where you live and how busy carpenters are

Speed matters too. Airtasker says to "expect to have to pay a premium" for urgent jobs. A low hourly rate can also end up dearer if the job takes longer, so compare the total, not the rate.

What are the rules for hiring a carpenter in Queensland?

In Queensland, building work valued over $3,300 must be done by someone with a QBCC licence. A handyman without one can only take on jobs up to $3,300 that are not electrical or plumbing work. The QBCC also says that using someone unlicensed may void your access to Queensland Home Warranty Insurance.

Here is what the QBCC says to check:

  • The licence. Ask to see their QBCC licence card or digital licence before you sign or pay. You can look up any name or number on the QBCC licensee register, which shows the full licence history.
  • The ad. Licensed contractors must show their name and QBCC licence number when they advertise. An ad without them is a warning sign.
  • A written contract. Work over $3,300, counting labour, materials and GST, needs a written contract.
  • The deposit. The legal maximum is generally 20% for work of $3,300 or less, 10% for $3,300 to $19,999, and 5% at $20,000 or more.

The QBCC says a deposit above the maximum is unlawful and must not be paid. Its deposits and progress payments page also says progress payments must match the work done. Some jobs need council or certifier approval as well, and our guide to council approval on the Gold Coast explains when.

How do I get a fair quote from a carpenter?

Get more than one quote, and make sure each one prices the same job. The QBCC recommends getting more than one, and says not to pick on the lowest price alone.

  • Have the carpenter see the job in person. The QBCC says a site visit gives a more accurate quote.
  • Give every carpenter the same list of tasks and materials.
  • Ask whether it is a fixed price or an hourly estimate, and what is not included.
  • Ask how unexpected work, like rotten timber found behind a wall, will be priced.
  • Check the licence and the deposit before you sign.

The QBCC adds a warning: if you accept a quote below fair market value and later need to claim on home warranty insurance, your payout may be reduced.

Where do these figures come from?

Checked on 5 October 2026: What's The Damage (Gold Coast carpenter costs, Brisbane carpenter costs and Gold Coast handyman costs, all October 2026), hipages (carpenter costs, updated August 2026), ServiceSeeking (carpenter prices, February 2026), The Quote Yard (tradie hourly rates, March 2026), Airtasker (carpenter costs, June 2024) and Yellow Pages (carpenter quotes, 2015). Rules from the QBCC (when you need a licence, August 2021; who must hold a licence, April 2026; finding a licensed contractor, December 2025; seeking and comparing quotes, June 2026; contract types and deposits, June 2025). The 8-hour comparison is our sum. We will check the prices again every three months.
