Sliding doors, fitted properly

Field Carpentry fits sliding doors across the Gold Coast: timber barn doors that run along the wall, cavity sliders that slide into it, and sliding glass doors out to the deck or yard. Brett Field has more than 25 years on the tools and holds QBCC licence 15316127.

A sliding door is only as good as its track and the wall behind it. Brett checks the wall can carry the weight, adds a timber mount where it needs one, and sets the track so the door runs smoothly.

What we do

  • Timber barn doors on a track
  • Double and bypass barn doors
  • Cavity sliding doors
  • Sliding glass doors to decks and patios
  • New openings and framing
  • Soft-close tracks and hardware
  • Repairs to sliders that stick or drag

How much does a barn door cost on the Gold Coast?

A barn door and track, supplied and installed, usually costs $600 to $1,200 in Queensland, according to The Quote Yard. Installing a standard single door and track you already have costs $300 to $600.

Barn door job (QLD)Typical cost
Supply and install$600 to $1,200
Install single door$300 to $600
Install heavy or double$500 to $1,000
Hang on existing track$150 to $350
Wall reinforcementAdd $150 to $400
Soft-close hardwareAdd $80 to $300
Adjust or repair$120 to $300

The Quote Yard, Queensland barn door prices (updated 2 June 2026), checked on 6 October 2026. Mates Rates' national 2026 guide is close: $550 to $1,200 supplied and installed, about 3 to 5 hours of work. A guide, not a quote. Brett's quote is the real number.

How much does a cavity sliding door cost?

A cavity slider costs about $800 to $1,200 per opening, including the door, track, frame kit and labour, according to Sparky (September 2026). A standard hinged door is about $400 to $700.

It costs more because the door slides inside the wall. The wall beside the doorway is opened up, a cavity frame goes in, and the wall is closed and finished again. For hinged doors, see our door installation cost guidedoor installation cost guide (out 8 October).

Barn door or cavity slider: which suits my home?

A barn door hangs on a track on the face of the wall, so it needs a clear stretch of wall beside the doorway at least as wide as the door. There is no work inside the wall, which keeps the cost down. It sits in front of the opening and leaves small gaps at the edges, so it suits a pantry, laundry or walk-in robe better than a bathroom.

A cavity slider disappears into the wall, so it takes no wall space when open. The wall beside the door must be free of pipes and wires, because that is where the door goes.

Can you fit a sliding glass door to a deck or patio?

Yes. Brett frames the opening, fits the door and finishes it inside and out. Prices depend a lot on the size and the glass, so they come from a quote.

Cutting a new opening in an outside wall changes the structure, and on the Gold Coast most renovations that change the structure need building approval. Our guide to council approval on the Gold Coast explains when. Near the surf, ask what grade of stainless steel the fittings are: the Australian Stainless Steel Development Association says grade 316 or better should be the minimum within five kilometres of the surf.

Does fitting a sliding door need a QBCC licence?

Building work over $3,300, counting labour and materials, must be done by a QBCC licensed contractor in Queensland. Field Carpentry holds QBCC licence 15316127.

Brett also does the rest of the carpentry around a door: doors, gates, feature walls and repairs across the Gold Coast.

Brett from Field Carpentry completed a renovation for us at our home in Ashmore on the Gold Coast. The project included two bathrooms, some large doors and windows, some brick work repairs, flooring modifications and some other bits. He was fantastic to work with and the quality of work was top notch. He was always very polite and considerate of us while living in the house through the Renos, always working with us to schedule things when it would suit our family movements. Brett is a very good communicator and a great builder. We will definitely use Field Carpentry again and would recommend them to other Gold Coasters.

Brett did a bang-up job repairing and restoring our wooden deck including building a set of fully-enclosed 2 metre wide steps from scratch. He listened to what we wanted to achieve and gave us a range of options to suit different budgets. A pleasure to deal with from go to whoa, we can't fault his work ethic, craftsmanship, communication or punctuality. Would we use him again? We're already writing our "2024 List for Brett"

Brett has done several renovation jobs for us over the last 15 years - timber and stainless steel back deck and railings, timber stairwell railings, refit and installation of cupboard units in laundry and bedrooms, and timber self-close fence side gate. A skilful tradie whose work I highly recommend - quality work, great follow-through, and just a great guy to have come into our home to do the necessary work.
