On the edge of the Gold Coast hinterland, about 14 km south-south-west of Surfers Paradise, you will find Mudgeeraba. It was a farming, timber and cattle town by the 1870s, and its old centre still has the feel of a village. Mudgeeraba Creek, the main creek of its catchment, feeds the Nerang River system.
Homes here are mostly large family houses, and many older ones sit on big blocks. That leaves room for outdoor work like a new deck or timber stairs, as well as a kitchen big enough for a full house.

What are homes like in Mudgeeraba?
Mudgeeraba is house country. In the 2021 Census, 78.0% of homes were separate houses, 20.8% were townhouses or similar, and just 0.4% were flats. Homes are big. Half of them (50.4%) had four or more bedrooms, and the average was 3.6.
Most owners are still paying off their home. 47.9% had a mortgage, 26.7% owned outright and 23.3% rented. Most older houses sit on blocks of half an acre to two acres, with larger farms nearby. A block that size gives you room to add a deck, rebuild old steps or put in a wide sliding door to the yard.

What to plan for on a Mudgeeraba job?
Two things: the age of the home and the bush. Mudgeeraba has had houses since the 1800s. QBCC warns that many homes built before 1990 may contain asbestos. Look for it in old gutters, gables, sheds, fences, splashbacks and the underlay under floors. Have anything you are not sure about tested before work starts, and see our guide to wood rot or termite damage for old timber.
If your block backs onto bush, check the council's bushfire overlay. It maps land a fire could badly affect, bush that could carry a fire, and nearby land open to ember attack. Building in a bushfire prone area may need extra checks under the City Plan and Queensland building rules.

Do you need council approval for a deck in Mudgeeraba?
For most new decks, yes. Gold Coast council says a new timber deck is likely to need building approval from a private certifier. A raised deck can skip it only if it is under 10 square metres, under 1 metre high and meets all building rules. A deck that sits on the ground with no posts does not need approval.
If a deck over 1 metre high sits within a setback, it may also need council approval. Your certifier sorts that out. Before you pick a spot, ask your certifier about footings. And if your land runs down to Mudgeeraba Creek, or to Bonogin or Wyangan Creek, check the council flood maps too.

How big can a Mudgeeraba deck be without approval?
The cut-off is small. A raised deck with no approval must be less than 10 square metres in area and less than 1 metre off the ground, and meet every other rule. 10 square metres is only about 3 metres by 3.3 metres. If you want room for a big table, plan for a certifier. Our deck cost guide explains what goes into the price.
Does Mudgeeraba Creek affect building work?
It can if your block is low or close to the water. Mudgeeraba Creek is the main creek of a catchment in the southern Gold Coast, and Bonogin and Wyangan Creeks feed into it. The council's flood maps show if a block is in a flood-affected area. If it is, the defined flood level helps you set new floors high enough.
