To renovate a kitchen on a budget, keep the layout and the cabinet boxes, and change what you see: the doors, benchtop, splashback, handles and paint. What's The Damage (Gold Coast page) puts that kind of cosmetic refresh at $7,850 to $19,600 in 2026, against $24,500 to $44,100 for a mid-range renovation.
Below is what a budget kitchen costs, what to keep, what to change first, what you can do yourself in Queensland, and the costs people forget. These are market prices from cost guides, checked on 12 October 2026. They are not a quote from us.
How much does a budget kitchen renovation cost?
A cosmetic refresh on the Gold Coast costs about $7,850 to $19,600, and a budget renovation with new flat-pack cabinets costs about $11,750 to $24,500. Both figures are from What's The Damage's Gold Coast page for 2026, and include GST.
| Type of job (What's The Damage, Gold Coast page, 2026) | Low | Typical | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cosmetic refresh (reface and paint) | $7,850 | $13,700 | $19,600 |
| Budget renovation (new flat-pack cabinets) | $11,750 | $17,650 | $24,500 |
| Mid-range renovation | $24,500 | $34,300 | $44,100 |
Canstar's kitchen cost guide (31 July 2026) quotes Three Birds Renovations, which puts a budget kitchen at $15,000 to $25,000. It says that tier is mostly cosmetic upgrades and basic repairs, with budget fittings such as flat-pack cabinets.
So the cheapest jobs keep the cabinets, and the price climbs once they are replaced. For full renovation prices, see our kitchen renovation cost guide.
What should I keep to save money on a kitchen?
Keep the layout first. What's The Damage says leaving the sink and cooktop where they are "saves a large slice of the budget". On its Gold Coast figures, moving them adds a plumbing rough-in of $1,475 to $4,900, plus new wiring at $1,475 to $3,925.
Then look at what else still works:
- The cabinet boxes. Cabinets are the most expensive part of a kitchen, at 30% to 40% of the budget (Canstar, citing CO-architecture). If the boxes are sound, keeping them is the biggest saving you can make.
- The appliances. A new oven, cooktop, rangehood and dishwasher package runs $2,950 to $9,800 on What's The Damage's Gold Coast page. Keep any that work well.
- The benchtop, if it is in good shape. That includes an old engineered stone one, with some care (see below).
Check the boxes before you build a plan around them. What's The Damage says to look under the sink for swollen board or mould first, because a new finish will not fix a damp carcass. If the base under the sink has gone soft, that cabinet may need replacing even if the rest stay.
What should I change first in a budget kitchen?
Change the parts you see and touch every day: the doors, the benchtop and the splashback. Here is what each costs on What's The Damage's Gold Coast page.
| Item (What's The Damage, Gold Coast page, 2026) | Price range |
|---|---|
| Respray, wrap or resurface the doors and panels | $1,950-$9,800 |
| Laminate benchtop, whole kitchen | $785-$2,450 |
| Tiled splashback | $390-$2,450 |
| Glass splashback | $785-$1,775 |
Refacing is where most of the money is saved. A new finish on the doors and panels costs $1,950 to $9,800, while a cabinet maker building new units costs $11,750 to $34,300 (What's The Damage, Gold Coast page). Our guide to whether to reface or replace kitchen cabinets compares the two in full.
A laminate benchtop is the budget pick. For other materials and what removal and cut-outs add, see what it costs to replace a kitchen benchtop. Small things help too. New handles and fresh paint on the walls change the look for very little.
Are flat-pack cabinets a good way to save?
Yes, when the old cabinets are too far gone to keep. What's The Damage puts a budget renovation built around flat-pack at $11,750 to $24,500 on the Gold Coast, typically $17,650. That is about half its typical mid-range price of $34,300.
Watch what a package leaves out. What's The Damage says most kitchen packages bundle the cabinets, a benchtop and installation, but demolition and disposal ($980 to $3,925), plumbing and electrical work are often listed separately. Two packages that look far apart on price often just include different things, so ask for each of those as its own line.
Board quality matters on the coast. What's The Damage suggests moisture-resistant boxes and sealed edges near the sink, because steam and damp air are hard on raw board edges. Our guide to what kitchen cabinets cost has flat-pack, semi-custom and custom prices per metre, plus what installation adds.
Can I keep my engineered stone benchtop?
Yes. Safe Work Australia says installed engineered stone does not appear to be a safety risk, as long as it is not cut or polished. What you cannot do is buy a new one. Since 1 July 2024 it has been illegal to make, supply, process or install engineered stone benchtops, panels or slabs.
Keeping a good one saves real money: What's The Damage's Gold Coast page puts a new stone benchtop at $2,450 to $8,800. But plan around it:
- Do not cut, drill or trim it yourself. Safe Work Australia says repairs, small changes and removal should go to a qualified tradesperson, who must control the dust and wear respiratory protection.
- Lifting it off is the tricky part. Under the model rules, putting the same benchtop back counts as installation, even with no cutting. Safe Work Australia says every state and territory has granted interim exemptions for some cases, so check with Workplace Health and Safety Queensland before you plan new cabinets under an old stone top.
If you are replacing it, look at laminate, timber, natural stone, or porcelain and sintered stone made without resin. None of those are covered by the ban.
What kitchen work can I do myself in Queensland?
You can do some building work on your own home, but never the plumbing, gas or electrical. The QBCC says an owner working on their own property does not need a licence when the work is valued at no more than $11,000.
- Plumbing, drainage and gas fitting need a licensed person at any value (QBCC).
- Electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician. Queensland's Electrical Safety Office says DIY electrical work is illegal, and that covers jobs as small as fitting a power point or a light switch.
Good DIY jobs are the ones with no pipes or wires, like painting the walls or changing handles. If you pay someone else for building work worth more than $3,300, they must hold a QBCC licence. What's The Damage suggests looking up the contractor's name on the QBCC licence register before you sign.
What costs blow out a budget kitchen?
Mostly the costs people forget, and the problems found once the old kitchen comes out. Canstar lists these hidden costs:
- pulling out the old kitchen and taking the waste away
- eating out, or setting up a temporary kitchen while you wait
- council or strata fees, if the kitchen is changed structurally
- problems found during the work, such as water-damaged frames or mould
Canstar also points out that a quote is a working estimate. Delays and surprises can push the real cost above it, so keep some money aside.
Two habits help, both suggested by What's The Damage. Get every quote broken into cabinets, benchtop, splashback, appliances and labour, so you can compare them line by line. And settle the design before demolition starts. Made-to-order joinery means a late change can hold up every trade that follows.
How much deposit can a contractor ask for in Queensland?
It depends on the value of the job. The QBCC sets these limits:
- $3,300 or less: up to 20%
- $3,301 to $19,999: up to 10%
- more than $20,000: up to 5%
There is an exception that matters for kitchens. A deposit of up to 20% is allowed when made-to-measure work done off site, such as kitchen cabinets, is more than 50% of the contract price. Progress payments have a limit too. A contractor cannot claim more than 50% of the price, deposit included, until at least half the work on site is done.
The QBCC also warns that if you pay more than the legal deposit, you cannot get the extra back through the home warranty scheme. Read its deposit and progress payment rules before you pay anything.
We do kitchen renovations across the Gold Coast, including partial refits where the layout stays and the benchtops, doors or cupboards change. We also install flat-pack kitchens. We book and run the trades, and you get a timeline with the proposal. See our kitchen renovations page.
