What is a butler's pantry, and do you need one?

What a butler's pantry is, how it differs from a walk-in pantry, the pros and cons, sizes and layouts, and the Queensland rules for adding a sink.

A butler's pantry is a small second work room off the kitchen, with bench space, storage and often a sink, where prep, appliances and dirty dishes stay out of sight. Kitchen maker Kaboodle calls it "a hardworking extension of your kitchen".

Whether you need one comes down to how you cook, how often you have people over, and whether you can spare the floor space. Below is how it differs from a walk-in pantry, the pros and cons, sizes, layouts, what to put in it, and the Queensland rules for the sink and power. The few prices here are market prices from cost guides, checked on 12 October 2026. They are not a quote from us.

What is a butler's pantry used for?

It is used for the messy and bulky side of the kitchen: prep, washing up, storing big items and running small appliances, so the main kitchen stays clear. The name is old. Wikipedia's entry on pantries says a butler's pantry was traditionally where the silver was cleaned, counted and stored, under the butler's lock and key.

Today it works more like a back kitchen. Most have:

  • bench space for prep and small appliances
  • cupboards, drawers or open shelves for food, platters and big pots
  • often a second sink, and sometimes a dishwasher or fridge

Kaboodle suggests treating it as "a flexible second kitchen": a coffee station, a breakfast zone, a baking bench or a drinks station. In an open-plan home the kitchen is always on show, so the pantry takes the clutter.

What is the difference between a butler's pantry and a walk-in pantry?

A walk-in pantry is for storing food. A butler's pantry is for storing and working, so it has benches and often a sink. Here is how the three names compare, using Wikipedia's entries on pantries and sculleries.

RoomMain jobWhat it usually has
Walk-in pantryStoring food and drinksShelves you can walk in to reach
Butler's pantryStoring serving gear and getting meals readyBenchtops and storage. Bigger ones add a sink, dishwasher or fridge
SculleryWashing up, and an overflow kitchenSinks, shelves and a work table

Source: Wikipedia, "Pantry" and "Scullery", checked 12 October 2026.

A modern butler's pantry with a sink and dishwasher does much the same job as an old scullery. If your plan is only shelves for tins and cereal, you want a walk-in pantry, and it will cost less.

What are the pros and cons of a butler's pantry?

The big plus is a tidy main kitchen. The big minus is that it takes floor space and adds cost.

ProsCons
Dirty dishes and appliances stay out of sightTakes floor space from the kitchen or the room next to it
Extra storage for platters, pots and small appliancesMore cupboards and benchtop to pay for
Extra bench space, so two people can work at onceA sink or new power points means a licensed plumber or electrician
A second sink for washing up while guests are in the kitchenA narrow one can feel cramped, and it needs its own lighting

Do I need a butler's pantry?

You do not need one, but it earns its space in some homes more than others.

It tends to suit you if:

  • your kitchen is open to the living area, so any mess is on show
  • you have people over often
  • your benches are crowded with a coffee machine, toaster, mixer and air fryer
  • two people cook at the same time

It is harder to justify if the kitchen is already a closed room, if the space would shrink the main kitchen too much, or if you mostly need food storage. Tall pantry cupboards may do that job for less. And it does not have to be a whole room: Kaboodle says it can be "a smaller area tucked behind your kitchen".

How big does a butler's pantry need to be?

Big enough to open the cupboards on both sides at the same time and still walk past. IKEA's kitchen planning guide says the gap between opposite rows of cabinets should let doors on both sides open at once.

MeasurementIKEA planning guide figure
Space between an island and other cabinets1200 mm, "to move around freely"
Full-depth cabinets600 mm deep
Shallow cabinets, for tight spaces370 mm deep
Small sinkFits a 600 mm cabinet, with at least 100 mm to the benchtop edges
Filler piece where cabinets meet a wallAt least 50 mm, so doors and drawers open fully

Here is the rough maths if you use IKEA's 1200 mm figure for a galley pantry. With 600 mm cabinets on both sides, the room needs to be about 2,400 mm wide inside (600 + 1200 + 600). Swap one side for 370 mm shallow cabinets and it drops to about 2,170 mm. Door swings, appliance doors and the benchtop all change this, so check the plan with whoever designs the kitchen.

What layouts work for a butler's pantry?

The same layouts as a kitchen, just smaller. IKEA's guide describes single-line, parallel, L-shaped and U-shaped kitchens, and each shape works for a pantry:

  • Single wall. One run of bench and cupboards. It suits a nook or a narrow room.
  • Galley. Benches on both sides. The most bench for the width, as long as the gap allows doors on both sides to open.
  • L-shape. Uses a corner. Kaboodle suggests corner storage and pull-out baskets so things at the back are easy to reach.
  • U-shape. The most bench and storage, but it needs the biggest room.

Then pick the way in. A hinged door or a cavity sliding door hides the mess, and an open doorway is easier with full hands. A cavity slider tucks into the wall, so it needs no room to swing. Our guide to door installation costs has cavity door prices.

What should go in a butler's pantry?

Start with a list of what you want to store and do in there, then plan the cupboards around it, as Kaboodle suggests. Ideas from its guide:

  • deep drawers for pots, pans and big platters
  • pull-out pantry baskets so food at the back is easy to see
  • open shelves for things you use every day
  • a second sink, and a dishwasher if there is room
  • space near the sink for a drying rack, cleaning products and the bins
  • task lighting over the bench, for early mornings and late nights

Work out the appliances early too. IKEA says to think about them in the early planning stages, so each one has a spot. Each needs a power point nearby, and a new power point is a job for a licensed electrician.

How much does a butler's pantry cost?

There is no set price. A butler's pantry is priced like any other run of kitchen cabinets, plus the benchtop, and plus the plumbing and power if it has a sink or appliances.

Cabinets are usually priced per lineal metre. Our guide to kitchen cabinet costs has per-metre prices for flat pack, semi-custom and custom cabinets, so you can price a pantry run the same way.

For the trades, What's The Damage (Gold Coast page, updated October 2026) lists a kitchen plumbing rough-in at $1,475 to $4,900 and an electrical rough-in at $1,475 to $3,925. Those are kitchen figures, so ask for the pantry's plumbing and power as separate lines in your quote. The same page puts a high-end kitchen renovation at $45,000 to $80,000+, and says that kind of job often includes a butler's pantry. More in our kitchen renovation cost guide.

What Queensland rules apply to a butler's pantry?

The licensing rules matter as soon as a pantry gets a sink or new power points. This is a short summary, not legal advice.

  • The sink. Plumbing and drainage need a QBCC licence at any value. The QBCC lists kitchen renovations and new kitchen sinks as notifiable work: the plumber needs no council permit, but must register the work with the QBCC within 10 business days of invoicing it.
  • Power points. The Electrical Safety Office says installing a new power point is electrical work, which needs a licensed electrician. Fitting, but not connecting, an electric wall oven into a cabinet is not electrical work.
  • Approval. Under Schedule 1 of the Building Regulation 2021, alterations inside a house do not need building approval unless they change the floor area or height, affect a structural part (apart from minor ones), or affect the fire safety system. So fitting out an existing room is usually fine. Taking out a load-bearing wall to make the opening is not. Our guide to council approval on the Gold Coast explains this, and a building certifier has the final word for your home.
  • Licence and deposit. Building work over $3,300 needs a QBCC licensed contractor. The most a contractor can ask as a deposit is 10% for work of $3,301 to $19,999, and 5% for work over $20,000. The QBCC allows up to 20% when made-to-measure cabinetry built off site is more than half the contract price.

What is different for a butler's pantry on the Gold Coast?

Humidity and salt air. We found no Gold Coast guide on this, so this comes from Sparky's Brisbane cabinet guide (updated September 2026). It says standard particleboard can "swell at joins and around the sink within 2-3 years" in Brisbane's humidity, and that HMR (high moisture resistant) board is the minimum for cabinet boxes. Ask what your pantry cabinets are made of.

Near the beach, the hardware matters too. What's The Damage's Gold Coast page says coastal suburbs need stainless or marine-grade fittings, and that standard chrome finishes will pit within 18 to 24 months.

We do full kitchen renovations and partial refits across the Gold Coast, including new cupboards, benchtops, island benches and layout changes, and we install flat pack kitchens. We book the licensed plumber and electrician and give you a timeline with the proposal. See our kitchen renovations page for the kitchens we have done.
