Most full bathroom renovations in Australia cost between $15,000 and $35,000 in 2026. A small, simple update can come in under $15,000, and a premium bathroom often goes past $35,000.
Below are the published price ranges, what each part of the job costs, how long it takes, and the Queensland rules to know before you sign anything. These are market prices from cost guides, checked on 4 October 2026. They are not a quote from us.
How much does a bathroom renovation cost in 2026?
A full renovation with standard finishes usually lands between $15,000 and $35,000. Here is what the main cost guides say.
| Source | Budget | Mid-range | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| hipages (quoted by Three Birds Renovations, 2026) | $8,000-$15,000 | $15,000-$35,000 | $35,000+ |
| Archicentre Australia Cost Guide 2026 | - | $17,500-$35,000 | - |
| Canstar (2025) | From $8,000 | $15,000-$35,000 (about $26,000 on average) | $35,000+ |
| OpenAgent (2026) | From $8,000 | $15,000-$35,000 | $35,000+ |
Archicentre's range assumes standard fittings and a room in sound condition, so an older bathroom often costs more than its figure.
How much does a small bathroom renovation cost?
A budget job in a small bathroom costs about $8,000-$15,000, and a mid-range job in a small ensuite about $12,000-$20,000. The low end means basic fittings and keeping the plumbing where it is.
| Source | Small bathroom cost | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| hipages (quoted by Three Birds Renovations, 2026) | $8,000-$15,000 | Budget or cosmetic job in a smaller bathroom |
| Yellow Pages (2025) | $5,000-$15,000 | Basic fittings, plumbing kept in place |
| What's The Damage (2026) | $12,000-$20,000 | Small ensuite (2-3 m2), mid-range |
| What's The Damage, Gold Coast (2026) | $14,700-$29,400 | Ensuite (3-5 m2), full strip-out, same layout |
The same Yellow Pages page also lists a small bathroom at $20,000-$27,000, so treat any one figure as a rough guide.
Small does not mean cheap per square metre. What's The Damage says the cost per square metre goes up as the room gets smaller, because waterproofing, plumbing and demolition cost about the same whatever the size.
Does a bathroom cost more on the Gold Coast?
We could not find a survey of real Gold Coast prices. The cost sites that show Gold Coast figures mostly adjust their national averages, so the national ranges above are your best guide.
What moves your price far more than the postcode is the job itself: the size of the room, whether the plumbing moves, what is hiding behind the old tiles, and the finishes you pick.
What does each part of a bathroom renovation cost?
Here is how the main pieces of the job are usually priced. Each one is a range, because tiles, fittings and room sizes vary so much.
| Item | Typical cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Demolition and disposal | $1,000-$3,000 | What's The Damage, 2026 |
| Skip bin, Gold Coast (3 m3) | About $533-$539 | Gold Coast skip hire price lists, 2026 |
| Waterproofing | $50-$85 per m2, or $500-$1,500 for most bathrooms | Yellow Pages, 2026 |
| Tiling | About $76 per m2 on average | ServiceSeeking, 2026 |
| Vanity, supplied and installed | $500-$3,500 | What's The Damage, 2026 |
| Frameless shower screen, installed | $800-$2,500 | What's The Damage, 2026 |
| Electrical (lights, exhaust fan, heated towel rail) | About $2,200 (8%) in a $27,000 job | What's The Damage, 2026 |
| Contingency for surprises | 10-15% of the budget | What's The Damage, 2026 |
Trades are the other big cost. ServiceSeeking's 2026 national averages are about $121 an hour for a plumber, $116 for an electrician, $91 for a tiler and $85 for a carpenter. A bathroom needs all four.
Only replacing the vanity? Our guide to what it costs to install a bathroom vanity covers the unit, the plumber and the wall prep.
What makes a bathroom renovation cost more?
The biggest jump comes from moving things. If the toilet, shower or vanity moves, the plumbing moves with it. OpenAgent says "leaving plumbing points where they are can slash labour costs", so keeping the same layout is the easiest way to save.
Other things that push the price up:
- Surprises behind the walls. Cost guides tell you to keep 10-15% aside for "rotten framing, asbestos, failed waterproofing". Older homes are more likely to have them.
- Timber floors. In older Queensland homes, a timber sub-floor may need repair before it can be waterproofed.
- Finishes. Premium tiles, a freestanding bath and a frameless shower screen all add up.
- Size. More floor and wall means more tiles, more waterproofing and more labour.
You can see the kind of finishes that sit at each end of the range in our recent work.
How long does a bathroom renovation take?
Most bathroom renovations take 3 to 4 weeks if nothing major changes, according to Yellow Pages, and it is wise to allow another 2 to 3 weeks for delays. Our guide to how long a bathroom renovation takes goes through each stage and why waterproofing sets the pace. Our bathroom renovations page shows how we run a job.
What Queensland rules apply to a bathroom renovation?
A few rules protect you as the homeowner. This is a short summary, not legal advice. The QBCC site has the full detail.
- Licence. Building work over $3,300 must be done by a QBCC licensed contractor. Plumbing and drainage need a licence at any value.
- Electrical. The Electrical Safety Office says DIY electrical work is unlicensed electrical work, which is illegal, with penalties of up to $40,000 for individuals.
- Waterproofing. Queensland still uses the 2022 National Construction Code, which points to the AS 3740-2021 standard. The NCC 2022 wet area rules say shower walls must be waterproof to at least 1800 mm above the floor substrate. Queensland has put off the 2025 code until 1 May 2027.
- Contract and deposit. Work over $3,300 needs a written contract. The most a builder can ask as a deposit is 10% for jobs of $3,301 to $19,999, and 5% for jobs of $20,000 or more.
- Insurance. Residential work over $3,300 must be covered by Queensland Home Warranty insurance. It pays up to $200,000 on claims.
How do I compare bathroom renovation quotes?
Quotes are only comparable if they cover the same job. Before you pick one, check that each quote says:
- who supplies the tiles, tapware and vanity, and what allowance is included for each
- that waterproofing is included, and who signs the certificate
- that strip-out, rubbish removal and the skip are included
- what electrical work is included
- the deposit, and when each progress payment falls due
- how long the job will take
A cost guide gets you in the ballpark. A real price needs someone to see the room, because size, layout and what is behind the tiles change everything.
