How does the fence calculator work?
Type in the length, the height and how far apart the posts go. The calculator follows Timber Queensland's data sheet for timber fences. It puts a post at each end and none further apart than the spacing you pick, then counts the rails, palings and nails. The cost uses What's The Damage's Gold Coast price per metre, plus each gate.
Gate posts and corner posts are bigger than the rest, so add those on top.
How many posts, rails and palings for a timber fence?
Timber Queensland's fence sheet (revised March 2014) sets the rules for fences up to 1.8 m high:
- Posts no more than 2.4 m apart with 100 x 38 mm hardwood rails, or 2.1 m with 75 x 38 mm rails.
- 2 rails for a fence up to 1.2 m high, and 3 rails above that, up to 1.8 m.
- Posts about 450 mm into the ground for a fence up to 1.2 m, and 600 mm above that, in holes at least 300 mm wide.
- Palings of 100 x 15 mm or 75 x 15 mm, fixed with two nails at each rail.
- Rails two spans long, with the joins staggered.
So a 20 m fence, 1.8 m high, with posts 2.4 m apart needs 10 posts, 3 rows of rails (60 m) and 200 palings of 100 mm, butted tight.
