Standard Bath Sizes in Australia

Inset, freestanding and corner bath sizes, and how to check fit.

There is no single standard bath size in Australia. In the Caroma and Decina ranges, the lengths that come up most are about 1500 to 1525 mm and 1650 to 1700 mm, and Caroma's baths run from 1400 to 1800 mm long. Decina's Fabrino inset bath, for example, comes in 1525 x 765 mm and 1675 x 765 mm.

Below are the sizes for inset, island and freestanding baths, the smallest baths you can buy, how to check one will fit, and whether a bath or a shower suits a small bathroom. Every size comes from the maker's own website, spec sheet or 2026 catalogue, checked on 26 October 2026. There are no prices here.

What is the standard bath size in Australia?

There is no official standard size. Makers sell baths in a run of set lengths, and the same few lengths come up again and again. Here is how the two ranges we checked line up.

Width matters as much as length. Caroma's range page gives lengths only, in each bath's name. In Decina's 2026 catalogue, most rectangular inset and island baths are 715 to 820 mm wide. Its freestanding baths are mostly 730 to 900 mm wide, apart from a few extra-wide models.

So if someone says "a standard bath", they usually mean one of the 1500 to 1700 mm sizes. Always check the exact size on the maker's spec sheet before you plan the room around it.

What sizes do inset baths come in?

Most inset baths come in two or three lengths between about 1500 and 1800 mm, with a few shorter ones. An inset bath is built into a tiled hob or wall. Decina says its four-sided tile bead lets an inset bath sit flush with a tiled wall for a watertight finish.

An island bath is the same idea, but set away from the walls. Decina says the tiled edge of the hob can be used as a seat or for storage. The Carina is one of these.

Caroma names its baths by length. Its Luna Four Tile Flange bath comes in 1525 and 1675 mm. Its Newbury, Vivas and Luna island baths come in 1525 and 1675 mm, and the Newbury and Maxton baths also come in 1800 mm.

What sizes do freestanding baths come in?

Freestanding baths run from about 1300 mm to 1800 mm long. Decina's 2026 catalogue says its freestanding range goes from 1300 mm soaker baths for compact bathrooms up to 1800 mm. Caroma's freestanding baths come in 1400, 1500, 1600, 1675, 1700 and 1800 mm lengths.

Freestanding baths sit higher than most inset baths. In Decina's catalogue they are 530 to 750 mm high, against 335 to 520 mm for its inset baths. That is worth knowing if anyone in the house finds a high side hard to step over. Decina says its freestanding baths stand on adjustable feet and need no hob, frame or extra tiling.

A back-to-wall bath is a freestanding bath made to sit flush against one wall. Decina says this saves floor space and makes cleaning easier. Caroma's back-to-wall baths come in 1400, 1500, 1600, 1700 and 1800 mm. For a corner, Caroma's Urbane II Back to Corner bath comes in 1500 and 1700 mm. Decina's Natalia corner bath is 1500 or 1700 mm long and 780 mm wide, in left or right corner versions.

What is the smallest bath you can buy?

The smallest bath we found is Decina's Bella shower bath, at 910 x 910 mm and 335 mm high. Decina says its shower baths can be used as a deep shower base, or as a small bath that is easy to get into.

Short baths trade length for height. Decina says the Cosmo soaker suits small bathrooms, and at 750 mm high it is the tallest freestanding bath in its catalogue. Decina also says its 1600 mm Sheraton freestanding bath was designed for smaller bathrooms.

Caroma's shortest baths are 1400 mm long. Those include freestanding and back-to-wall models, and its Round freestanding bath also comes in 1400 mm.

How do you check a bath will fit?

Measure the space, then check it against the maker's spec sheet, not just the name on the box. Here is what to check, in order.

  1. Measure the space. Measure wall to wall for the length and out from the wall for the width. For an inset bath, allow for the hob or frame around it.
  2. Read the spec sheet. Decina's spec sheets say sizes can vary by plus or minus 5 mm, and ask you to confirm the details before you buy.
  3. Check where the waste sits. The Fabrino has an end waste and the Carina has a centre waste. The waste needs to line up with the plumbing, or the plumber has to move it.
  4. Check the height. A tall freestanding bath is harder to step into than a low inset one.
  5. Check the way in. Make sure the bath fits through the doors and the hallway on the way to the bathroom. Decina lists the Carina at 18.5 to 25 kg and the Fabrino at 17 to 19 kg.
  6. Wait for delivery. Decina recommends that installation does not start until the bath has been delivered.

Most Decina inset baths can also sit on a base support frame with height-adjustable feet. Decina says this removes the need for steel framing, a wet bed slurry or a mortar bed under the bath.

We renovate bathrooms across the Gold Coast. Brett does the strip-out and the framing, and books licensed trades for the plumbing, waterproofing and tiling. You get a timeline with your proposal. See our bathroom renovations page.

Bath or shower in a small bathroom?

A shower takes less floor space than a full-length bath, so it usually wins in a small bathroom. A 900 x 900 mm shower uses 0.81 m2 of floor. A 1525 x 765 mm Fabrino bath uses about 1.17 m2, and the 1675 mm Fabrino about 1.28 m2.

Those figures cover only the bath or the shower itself. A shower also needs room for its door or screen to open. Our guide to the standard shower size covers that space.

If you want both, a shower bath does the job of each in less space. Decina says inset baths with a slip-resistant base, such as its Bambino, Fabrino and Modena, make good shower baths. Its Bella, at 910 x 910 mm, takes about the same floor as a 900 x 900 mm shower but can still be filled as a small bath.

Some people drop the bath for a walk-in shower instead. If the room only needs a toilet and a basin, see our guide to powder room size. For what a full job costs, see our bathroom renovation cost guide.

Where do these figures come from?

Checked on 26 October 2026: the Caroma baths range page (no page date shown); the Decina Fabrino inset bath page and spec sheet (no page dates shown); the Decina Carina island bath page and spec sheet (no page dates shown); and the Decina 2026 product catalogue. Sizes are the makers' own, and can change. We will check them again every three months.
